PORTUGAL, Gaula : Jose Nobre stands in his burned house after a fire in Gaula, some 20 km from Funchal on July 20, 2012 on the island of Madeira. Fires raged around the towns of Calheta, Ribeira Brava and Santa Cruz, where one house was destroyed and a health centre, school and youth centre were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The problems began on the evening of July 18 when high temperatures and strong winds fanned a fire that broke out on the edge of the capital Funchal, gutting two houses and partially burning a third.
